the ocean, animals and even man by His Word. Genesis 1:1-31 Genesis 2:1-25
I love that scripture that says that God is …upholding all things by the word of His power
…Hebrews 1:3 Notice it doesn’t say power of His Word because if it did that would make God’s
power measurable and God’s power is unmeasurable.
God has unmeasurable power from the words that come out of His mouth. We are unable
to even fathom how great our God is and the power of His Word. He created everything
I have noticed over the years that many preachers in denominational churches are telling
their congregations that there is power in the word of God and also in your own word. Power
for a positive effect on your life or a negative effect.
The more you read the Word of God you will see the creative power of God’s Word and
how it affected so many people in the Bible. Sometimes it is presented in a subtle way but
it is weaved through much of the Word of God.
As you read God’s Word you see that our Lord is big on imagery. He uses it over and over
again and we see supernatural results. Imagery i.e. getting a picture of something.
God was searching for a man that could be the father of the Jewish nation and He picked Abram.
But Abram had 2 strikes against him already as he was 75 years old at the time and still no children,
his wife was named Sarai. Imagine that, the father and mother of the Jewishrace and at 75 for Abram
and 65 for Sarai they still had no children. I’m sure it was very frustrating for them as having children
was of very big importance in their day and they would have been talked about and smiled upon
by many as they lived their lives childless.
You have to remember they had no benefit of the Word of God like you and I do and of course they
were not born again, so they did not have the Spirit of God in them. So in their own selves they were
extremely handicapped from what you and I are today. So much of the time we forget about the
limitations that these Old Testament Bible characters had.
Let’s start with their names, names in Bible times were very important, God changed the names of
some of the individuals in His Word.
Abram meant “exalted father” meaning perhaps the father of someone, so God decided to change
Abram’s name to Abraham which means "father of a multitude.” You see in Genesis 12:1-2 God
had already promised Abram that He was going to make of him a great nation and make his name
great and Abram was to be a blessing and God’s desire for Abram sure didn’t line up with the name
he originally had so God changed his name. (You can read about Abrahams life from Gen. 12:1
through Gen 25:11).
Do you remember that I stated at the start of this teaching that God is great at imagery.
God had to get Abram’s thinking in line with the purpose that God had for Abram’s life. He
could no longer be called Abram as that did not bring an image of a father of a multitude but
instead he was called an exalted father, it had to be greater than that.
You see how this name change works, Abraham now went around and when people asked
him his name he told them it was Abraham “the father of a multitude” that helped to change
Abraham’s image of himself and Sarai. Then God changed Sarai’s name which means
“princess” to Sarah which means 'noblewoman’” she was the founding mother of Israel.
So as Abraham and Sarah went about their daily life they told people their names and
called each other by their name until an image got on the inside of them that this
seemingly impossible calling that God had for them would come to pass.
God always desires to work with man to create something in them and from them.
He wouldn’t have to, God could have just made Sarah pregnant from Abraham without
them entering into agreement with Him but God wants us to enter into agreement with
Him, it is important to God.
Now that I have set the stage, so to speak, we will go further into this imagery from other
examples in God’s Word next Monday.
We recently received an e mail from a pastor and a missionary in Africa who had gone to our
